Here at Big Lick Vet, we think taking a proactive approach to your dog’s health is important and it’s one of the reasons we follow the recommendations of the AVMA and highly recommend year-round Heartworm Prevention and Flea/Tick Prevention. Listed below are the preventatives we most commonly recommend for healthy adult dogs. Please talk to your vet about which preventatives are best for your individual pet. All of the preventatives discussed are prescriptions, so your dog must have had a physical examination within the past year and a negative heartworm test within the past year. Recommended Prevention for Dogs
In most healthy adult dogs, we recommend using both Sentinel and Bravecto. Heartworms, intestinal parasites, fleas, and ticks are year-round concerns in our area that require year-round protection.
Sentinel is a long standing oral heartworm prevention for dogs that is given once monthly. This small flavor tab is used to help control hookworms, roundworms and whipworms as well as preventing adult fleas from reproducing. We do not, however, recommend relying on Sentinel for full flea protection – it does not kill adult fleas and therefore can not be relied upon to prevent and treat an infestation. This product is proven safe in puppies 4 weeks and older that weight at least 2 pounds.
Bravecto is an oral flea and tick prevention that is given once every 3 months. This chewable is used to control fleas and ticks for up to 12 weeks. Unlike topical flea and tick products, it does not wash off during baths, while swimming, or in the rain, nor does it leave a greasy residue. This product is approved safe in puppies 6 months and older and 4.4 pounds and larger.
Keep in mind that each patient is an individual with individual needs, so if you have a puppy or kitten, a breeding dog or cat, or a pet with allergies or other health concerns, please talk to your vet about the right prevention for your individual pet.
